I can recommend the following: - "Search Dog Training" by Sandy Bryson Covers many areas including Basic Training, Standards and Testing,Area, Disaster and Evidence searching. - "Scent and the Scenting Dog" by William G. Syrotuck Covers scent theory extensively. - "Tracking Dog, theory and methods" Good source if you intend to train a dog in tracking as opposed to airscenting or trailing. The best place to find these materials is the National Assoc. of Search and Rescue (NASAR) library. Write or call for a catalog. NASAR Headquarters PO Box 3709 Fairfax, Virginia 22038 Phone - 1-703-352-1349 NASAR E-MAIL is nasar@laser.net NASAR also publishes a newsletter for the SAR Dog community once per quarter. Ask for subscription info for the " SAR DOG ALERT". I hope this info helps. It has some off mainstream ideas but should be read. HOWEVER, THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF WORKING SAR DOGS IS TO BE WITH A RESPECTED TEAM WHO MAINTAINS APPROPRIATE PERFORMANCE STANDARDS. It is nearly impossible too be successful alone. If you need help finding one drop me an E-MAIL. Their address is: National Police Bloodhound Association 416 S. Main Street, Greensburg, Pennsylvania 15601. A good reference book is: The Police Textbook For Dog Handlers by Bill Tolhurst, available through: Sharp Printing, 3477 Lockport Road, Sanborn, New York 14132. Another good reference book is Bloodhounds and How to Train Them by Leon F. Whitney, D.V.M., although the book is out of print and may be expensive if you do find it. FYI I'm working two bloodhounds that I got from New Mexico (Glenn Rimbey). Great dogs! Happy Hunting Rick Laing Maple Ridge Search and Rescue Maple Ridge, B.C.
