NORTH SHORE RESCUE TEAM SOCIETY CALLOUT PROCEDURE (Effective February 1995) The North Shore Rescue team is activated through the North Vancouver RCMP office. The following outline will guide you through the procedure. 1 - Call the North Vancouver RCMP at (604) 985-1311 (See also Note 1 below). 2 - Explain who you are and ask for the officer in charge. 3 - Briefly explain who you are and that you need them to page the North Shore Rescue team. 4 - Be sure to provide a contact number that will not be busy when the SAR managers return your call. Note 1: During working hours (Monday-Friday 8:30-4:30) the North and West Vancouver Emergency Program should be called to activate the North Shore Rescue Team. This is more efficient than calling the RCMP. The Emergency Program telephone number is (604) 985-3713. Note 2: The Team callout procedure shown above is the most accurate and efficient means of contacting the team and should be followed at all times. Do not contact team members individually as this could cause delays in the response. CALLOUT RESPONSE When the North Shore Rescue team is paged, three duty SAR managers will respond. If the initial page included your telephone number, then you will receive all three calls at some point. After you have given your information to the first SAR manager that calls, then just give that persons name to the other two when they call. This saves you repeating the information three times. TEAM ADDRESS The North Shore Rescue Team is affilliated with the North & West Vancouver Emergency Program based in North Vancouver. The Team uses the Emergency Program address: 165 East 13th St. North Vancouver, BC V7L 2L3 TEAM OVERVIEW The North Shore Rescue Team is based in North Vancouver and has approximately 40 - 45 members. The basic membership requirements include a demonstrated knowledge of map and compass, extensive area familiarity, basic first aid, radio communications and basic climbing skills. A number of members have very advanced training and experience in the areas of first aid, climbing, tracking and communications. In addition, all members are generally equipped with clothing to suit the working environment. The North Shore Rescue Team responds to approximately 40 calls a year in the mountains surrounding the North Shore. The team operates a mobile command and communications unit as a search base and uses the offices of the Emergency Program as a resource centre during the operation. The Team has many specialized pieces of equipment that it can utilize during any operation. Some of these items are: Advanced hypothermia treatment and first aid equipment, portable radio repeater and transportable base units, transportable base camp kit and cliff rescue kits. If your operation requires any of this specialized equipment, be sure to let the SAR managers know so arrangements can be made to include this equipment in the response.
