This pub is aimed at people using GPS in technical research or other pretty technical manner, but it's focus is simply, "News and Application of the GPS." Article topics are varied, but if you are looking for all kinds of info on all the systems available, this is an excellent listing. Very technical in nature, but addresses some of the GPS questions posed in this group (like Temp. range for operation). Source listed at end of post Info includes by manufacturere and model (54 manufacturers, 275 receivers): -Intro date -Channels/tracking mode -signal that it tracks -max # satellites tracked -Use (land/marine/aviation/space -Applications (military, navigation, surveying&GIS,Timing&frequency, vehicle & vesseltracking, other position location, other) -Size (WxHxD in inches, to nearest 10th of inch) -Weight to tenth of lb. -Accuracy (single/differential/post. diff) without selective availability capabilities. Accuracy is rated in terms of: meters, velocity (m/sec), time (ns), and update rate (sec). -Time to first fix. This rated in terms of warm start (has recent almanac, current time, and initial position but no current ephemeris); cold start (none of the previous known); reacquisition (when signal lost for a minute). -Number and types of computer interface ports -baud rate of interface -Temperatures that it is rated for, storage and operational, in C. -Humidity ratings (noncondensing) -Power consumption (watts) -input voltage (Vdc) -antenna type -whether provisioned for an external antenna -whether postproduction software is available for it -warranty period and finally U.S. List price Accompanying article in this issue: "Innovation: Understanding GPS Receiver Terminology-A Tutorial" This article assumes basic scientific familiarity with GPS signals, etc., but it does address fascinating details. Single issue price is $12 (!) Source: GPS World; PO Box 7677; Riverton, NJ 08077-7677 1-800-949-6525 9-5 EST - STANDARD DISCLAIMER! Terri Watson terri_watson@nols.edu Lander, Wyoming (Terri Watson)
