** Search for Ex Deputy Fish & Game Commissioner on Admiralty Isl. AK ** Tue Dec 03 12:57:40 1996 From: Bruce_Bowler@dot.state.ak.us Subject: 12/3 Anchorage Daily News METRO SECTION: MISSING HUNTER FOUND The Associated Press JUNEAU -- The man who ran Arliss Sturgulweski's 1990 gubernatorial campaign was found by searchers Monday after he failed to meet up with his hunting party on Admiralty Island. McKie Campbell made it to a beach on the island after he realized he was lost. Campbell, 46, was found shortly after 11 a.m. in good condition by searchers, and was flown back to Juneau by an Army National Guard helicopter. "I'm very embarrassed," he said Monday. "I'm humbled and very grateful." Campbell was reported missing after he failed to hook up with his hunting party Sunday during a trip to Doty Cove -- about 15 miles southeast of Juneau on Admiralty Island. On Monday, a Coast Guard boat deposited Alaska State Troopers, searchers from Juneau Search and Rescue, SEADOGS and some of his friends on a beach to look for him. Campbell said he went up a ridge on the Glass Peninsula, and rather than coming down the eastern, Stephens Passage side of the peninsula, found himself looking at Seymour Canal on the west side. About 12:30 p.m. Sunday, he realized he was lost, and started hiking east. Campbell, an experienced hunter, had a map, a compass, an emergency blanket, a fire starter and a small saw. "I just went east from there," he said. "I hiked until about midnight. I was very fortunate. It was cold, below freezing, but in general I was very fortunate about the weather." He fashioned a bed out of spruce, slept until about 5 a.m., and walked to the beach. There, he found the searchers. Campbell served on the Juneau Assembly from 1987 to 1989 and worked as an assistant to the commissioner of the state Department of Fish and Game starting in 1991. After working in Gov. Wally Hickel's office for a time, he was a deputy Fish and Game commissioner in 1993 and 1994. Campbell ran the unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign of Republican Arliss Sturgulewski in 1990, said Chip Wagoner, a Juneau attorney who helped with the campaign. Campbell has been working as a Juneau consultant for CH2M Hill Inc. ---------------------------------
