*** Barr Camp Caretaker Rescued *** From: RLEE@cosmpdaero.ftcollinsco.ncr.com">Ron Lee January 3rd, 1996: - Colorado Springs, Colorado An El Paso Search and Rescue team evacuated a 24-year-old Colorado Springs man from Barr Trail on Pikes Peak west of Colorado Springs Sunday after he accidentally stabbed himself in the thigh and couldn't hike down. Dan Tibbits, who is a member of the caretaker crew at Barr Camp located about 8 miles from the trailhead in Manitou Springs, accidentally stabbed himself Saturday night. According to Larry Lewis, Public Information Officer for El Paso County Search and Rescue, Tibbits injured himself Saturday night. Lewis said that Tibbits was able to bandage the 2 to 3-inch gash overnight, but when he tried to hike down Sunday morning, he was unable to walk the 8 miles to Manitou. Another employee at Barr Camp called for help. Thirteen members of the volunteer search organization were dispatched about 10 a.m. Tibbits was carried by litter to an abandoned road used for rescues. He was transferred to a rescue vehicle and brought down the wilderness road by the team and transferred to an ambulance. He was treated at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs.
