Both fell from a high rock, hit a lower part of the rock and landed near the roadside of Colo. 119 about five miles up the canyon, west of the Sugarloaf Road turnoff. An investigation by the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group said the top anchor the climbers used had failed. The two climbers were 24 years old and were Boulder residents, according to Boulder County Sheriff Sgt. George Dunphy. Neither climber was wearing a helmet. It is unclear how much experience the climbers had. Witnesses said both fell at the same time, about 3 p.m. Some rope remained on top of the rock, about 125 feet high, called Brick Wall. Rocky Mountain Rescue Group climbers estimated the difficulty of the climb in rock climber`s terms as approximately a 5.10. This accident is currently under investigation by a joint effort of the Boulder County Sheriff's Dept. and Rocky Mountain Rescue Group. There are a number of unusual aspects to this accident.
