*** Two Lost Hunters found on Mount Provost, BC *** From - Mon Nov 25 05:49:46 1996 To: sarinfo@mindlink.bc.ca From: granbois@islandnet.com (R & L Granbois) Subject: Duncan - Two Lost Hunters Duncan, BC Wednesday, November 20, 1996 Duncan/North Cowichan Search and Rescue received a call out for two lost hunters at 0430 hrs. Russell Hynes 24 and his brother Bradley 18 had gone hunting the day before in the Mt. Provost area near Duncan and had not returned. They were poorly dressed for winter conditions and it had snowed about 10 cm. overnight bringing the snow cover to about 30 cm. Their vehicle had been located on the southwest side of the mountain the night before by family members. Nineteen SAR personnel responded to the search plus two RCMP dog teams, a RCMP helicopter, a plane from PEP Air and an ambulance from EHS. One of the dog teams dicovered a snowed in trail at 0917hrs and at 1055hrs a camp was found consisting of broken fir bows they had used for a bed but there was no sign of a fire. The trail was fresh at this point and was then easy to follow. The trail soon started circling upon itself and shortly there after voice contact was made and the men were located at 1133hrs. The RCMP helicopter evacuated the hunters to Cowichan District Hospital where they were treated for hypothermia. Randy Granbois Duncan/North Cowichan Search and Rescue
