MISSION REPORTS: June 1995 El Paso County Search and Rescue Colorado Springs, Colorado submitted by Ron Lee (ron.lee@symbios.com) 1 June, 1995...STANLEY CANYON..missing hiker located by family soon after page went out. 14 EPCSAR team members participated. 2 June, 1995... HIKER MISSING IN STANLEY CANYON AREA OF RAMPART RANGE. Colorado Springs, CO. An 18 year old male from out-of-state was reported missing after hiking into Stanley Canyon on the U. S. Air Force Academy grounds in the Rampart Range northwest of Colorado Springs. A page went out to El Paso County Search and Rescue at 22:38 hours. EPCSAR's Mobile Communications/Command Post van was dispatched to the Academy Hospital parking lot to provide better radio communications. The canyon area was searched throughout the night by hasty and dog teams. The subject appeared at daylight 12 miles north of the search area after following lights of the community of Monument, Colorado. Subject had sought shelter during night from driving rains which ocurred intermittently throughout the night. Had become disoriented after using what he thought was Pikes Peak as his landmark. (Pikes Peak is not visible from the area he traversed). Mission terminated at 06:51 on 6/3/95. 20 EPCSAR team members participated 4 June, 1995...Park County requested support to locate two missing Boy Scouts in the Lost Creek Wilderness area. EPCSAR members paged at 0743 hours "PARK COUNTY HAS TWO BOY SCOUTS LOST NEAR TERRYALL (LOST CREEK WILDERNESS AREA). ELEV 11600. DEEP SNOW. MEMBERS AVAIL FOR RAPID DEPLOYMENT CALL RESCUE 70 . . .. ". The scouts left from Spruce Creek Campground on Saturday, intending to make the Hankins Pass - Lake Park Trail loop and return to Spruce Creek later on Saturday. They apparently became disoriented in the deep snow present at the higher elevations. El Paso County SAR arrived Sunday morning to support the existing Park County effort. EPCSAR teams were sent in through Spruce Creek and Goose Creek Trail heads. The Scouts sat out the night building a fire to keep warm. They walked out to the Goose Creek trailhead the next morning, arriving before the El Paso County team, and hitched a ride. They ended up in Deckers, Colorado where they called in their location. Mission called off at 1312 hours 5 June 95. 11 EPCSAR team members participated. 4 June, 1995... Overdue dad and daughter. A 30 year old Colorado Springs resident and his 3 year old daughter were reported overdue after spending the day fishing at Rampart Reservoir in the Rampart Range nortwest of Colorado Springs. Heavy rains had pounded the area during the day. El Paso County Search and Rescue responded for a road search at 22:28 hours. Search area is about 25 road miles from rescue base. The missing parties returned home on their own during the search. Mission terminated at 23:24 hours. 3 EPCSAR team members participated. 5 June, 1995...Four overdue hikers on the Intemann Trail. They turned up shortly after being reported overdue. 2 EPCSAR team members participated. 11 June, 1995...Two people stranded with their vehicle stuck in bog on Fire Service Road 305 off Rampart Range Road. They attempted to call in their location, but had a poor cell phone connection. Search teams headed along Rampart Range road from both Mt. Herman and the Garden of the Gods. Later cell phone call fixed position and Rescue 15 accompanied Forest Service personnel to locate stranded people and take them to Woodland Park. 7 EPCSAR team members participated. 12 June, 1995...Three overdue teenage campers presumed to be at Rampart Reservoir. Team called to check for car at Rampart Reservoir. Teenagers showed up before search began.3 EPCSAR team members participated. 16 June, 1995...Dog team requested by state coordinator to support Pueblo County search. No clues found. Search terminated due to lack of evidence. 4 EPCSAR team members participated. 17 June, 1995...Two men reported overdue from fishing at Rampart Reservoir. Team sent in Utility 1 to check for car at Rampart Reservoir. The fishermen returned home on their own. 4 EPCSAR team members participated. 17 June, 1995...A canoe with two men capsized due to wind on Rampart Reservoir. One individual swam to shore and was rescued by EPCSAR Boat 1. Ground teams were dispatched to search for the other individual. Teams searched along the shore by foot and in the water near the shore by boat. The second individual, who had drowned, was found the following day by Colorado Springs Police Department dive teams. 19 EPCSAR team members participated. Additional support received from Teller County SAR, NE Teller County Fire District, U S. Forest Service, and a private boat owner. 20 June, 1995...A family of seven got separated on Barr Trail. The children arrived at Barr Camp and reported their parents missing. The parents showed up at Barr Camp suffering from Acute Mountain Sickness just when Barr Camp was calling in the report. There was no SAR response required. 1 EPCSAR team member participated as IC. 20 June, 1995 Metal detector requested by state Co-ordinator to support evidence search in murder case. 2 EPCSAR team members participated. ------------------------------
