*** Medical Rescue of Sick Hiker in Harvey Basin *** September 1st 1997 Harvey Basin, B.C. At 1500hrs on Sunday September 1st Emergency Health Services (EHS) received an emergency 911 cellphone call from a hiker and his companion in the upper Harvey Basin above Lions Bay, British Columbia. The pair had been hiking down from the region of Mount Harvey-Harvey Pass when Andre' developed symptoms of frequent coughing, coughing up blood and a flushed appearance. Andre' was placed in a yellow nylon tent with a green tarpaulin while his companion, Carl, ran down the overgrown logging road towards Lions Bay. When Carl found a group of hikers with a cellphone he placed the cellphone call to EHS who then activated Lions Bay Search & Rescue, via the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Determining the actual location of the subject took quite some time to deduce, due to the lack of local knowledge and vague description of the area that the informant provided, despite two follow-up cellphone interviews. Eventually it was believed that the upper Harvey Basin was the most probable location and a helicopter was quickly flown to Lions Bay to transport rescuers to the probable location of the subject. The first search team in the helicopter could not find the tent, but quickly spotted the two hikers in a washed out section of gravel on the Harvey Basin logging road. Landing on the gravel bed the team determined that the two hikers had taken down their tent and were proceeding down the logging road, after placing their 911 call for help. The subject did not appear to be in serious medical condition and he and his partner were flown down to the Lions Bay SAR Base, where a waiting ambulamce transported Andre' to Lions Gate Hospital for further examination. The task was concluded in the early evening with the two back-up teams released when the subject was transferred to the ambulance.
