*** Two Overnight Operations leave SAR Teams Scrambling *** 22nd July 1998 Llyn Canyon Park, Vancouver, B.C. The Lynn Canyon claimed yet another young life in a series of deep pools popular with teenage cliff-divers. The North Shore Rescue reponded to a report of a 13 year-old missing from a group of five youths who had been diving off cliffs into the Lynn Canyon's '90 ft Pool', a popular but unsafe diving location. When one youth did not surface the police were alerted and the North Shore Rescue team responded to the canyon. By late evening search teams and divers had not found the subject and a net was strung across the pool's outlet, to act as containment. Park officials are frustrated by the actions of youths who ignore the warning signs, climb the fences and even continued to dive into the pools during the search/recovery operation. The body of the young man was recovered by the dive team early the following morning. Burke Mountain, Coquitlam. B.C. Later the same night Vancouver's Lower Mainland SAR teams again responded to a call of asssistance, this time to search for a female hiker, Cindy Delmonico, age 31, overdue from a day hike on Burke Mountain, near Coquitlam, B.C.. Overnight searching had failed to locate the lone female, who had left a note on her car indicating that she intended to return the same evening. Search teams checked out numerous tracks in the popular hiking areas and by 0330 hours on the 23rd July, requested mutual aid. Lions Bay, Ridge Meadows and Surrey SAR teams responded to Coquitlam and by 0500 hours helicopters were being deployed to the search areas on Burke Mountain. At approximately 0630 hours Cindy was located in the southern forest slopes, using the Sound Sweep search technique. She was reported to be in good condition and was quickly flown back to Coquitlam, somewhat tired but otherwise unhurt. Prepared by, Martin Colwell Lions Bay Search & Rescue sarinfo@istar.ca
