*** Hiker Rescued after Rockfall in Loose Gully *** August 13th 1997 Mount Harvey, B.C. Lions Bay Search & Rescue were called to the assistance of hikers who had wandered into the steep northern gully system of Mount Harvey (5590ft). Earlier in the day Kenneth Campbell and Jamie Clark, both Vancouver residents, had attempted to climb Mount Harvey via a logging slash on the northern slopes of the mountain, but lost the trail due to recent logging road and surveying work in the area. Kenneth and Jamie attempted to reach the ridgline trail by climbing up long drainage gullies that bisect the mountain's north side. Kenneth attempted one gully, which looked innoccuous from below, while Jamie attempted a second gully close by. As they climbed the gullies became steeper and looser, wih steep sidewalls and numerous small rocksteps. At one point Kenneth released a small rockslide beneath his feet and felt uneasy about continuing, or attempting to climb back down the loose gully. Jamie, hearing the rockslide, called to Kenneth and said he was going down to get help. After hiking down the logging roads Kenneth met a work crew above Lions Bay who paged out Lions Bay Search & Rescue at 1500 hours. Ground teams were despatched to Mount Harvey, while the cliff rescue kit was prepared and a helicopter flown in to provide transportation and logistic support. The searchers, upon reaching the base of the gullies, did not make contact with the subject and so the helicopter was used to bring more searchers and equipment into the search area. Later the ground team established voice contact and then sighted the subject. Using safety ropes Kenneth was moved down to a slightly more secure part of the gully, approximately 100m above a log that bridged the gully. This log was used as a 'platform' for the helicopter to 'toe-in' to retreive the subject and searchers from the gully. With precise flying and tight clearances the pilot performed two flights into the gully to pick up the subject and searchers. To extract the helicopter from the confines of the gully required carefully backing out horizontally until the craft was clear of the gully walls, an impressive piece of flying. By 2000hrs all personnel were safely returned to the Lions Bay SAR Base, for pizza and soda, after a long hot afternoon in the rockwall's of Mount Harvey.
