*** Missing Youth found in Mueller State Park, Colorado *** Fri Jun 14 07:34:29 1996 Letter : 13086994 From: Ron Lee Address : ronlee@frii.com Subject : Final report on boy missing in Mueller State Park To: sar_admin@mindlink.bc.ca This report provided by Mike Porter, mission coordinator for El Paso County Search and Rescue. At 0605 hours on June 13, 1996, the Colorado State Rescue Board (CSRB) coordinator notified me as the 'On Duty Coordinator' for El Paso County Search and Rescue that Teller county needed help in a search for a 14 YOA male who was a border-line diabetic. The lost boy had been out in the woods all night. The subject had been fishing with family at Mueller State Park south of Divide, Colorado on the afternoon of 6/12/96. He started to feel sick to his stomach and weak. The last meal consumed by the boy was at 1400 hrs on that day. While returning from the lake with the family he got separated from the group. Teller County responded with local team assets for a night search and failed to locate the boy. Early the next morning, June 13, at approx 0200 to 0300 hrs, the Teller IC contacted State for help during the next operational period. I was notified at 0605 and immediately contacted the Teller IC for more data. Teller IC requested trained Search Managers, and trained ground searchers to help in the search operation. Additional information showed the boy was dressed with shorts, t-shirt and light jacket when last seen. Night temperatures at Mueller that night were mid-30's. With these few facts, I classified the mission as a "High Priority Response Mission" and toned it out for deployable members who could respond quickly to Mueller. I had nine members, which included management and highly experienced ground searchers, form up and deployed immediately with Squad 1 (transport vehicle) and personal vehicles. I tagged an Army Blackhawk helicopter to land at the El Paso team's Base Headquarters in Colorado Springs to pick up R16 (personal member designation) for air operations. An EPCSAR dog team (R11 and Duke) was already on scene during the first operational period. The Sheriffs Office was alerted that we had activated our assets for "SAR Mutual Aid" to another county. The boy was found by a Teller Search and Rescue ATV driver at approx 0830 hours. He was on the move on a well established trail going downhill. He was found in the Primary Search Area and was in good condition. Members who were involved with the mission: R23 (IC), R30 (Operations), R16 (Air Operations), R11 and Duke, R10, R12, R33, R36, R38, R50, R58, R70 and R91 (State). A strong team!!!
