October 11, 1995 - Colorado Springs, CO. High angle rescue teams were paged at 06:45 hours to respond to the summit of Pikes Peak to rescue a dog that had become stranded. Upon arrival, team members learned that the dog had dissappeared the previous evening after chasing a marmot over rocks above the area known as Bottomless Pit on the north side of the summit. Due to the shear slope the owner was unable to see the dog. The following morning the dog was heard barking at a far distance below the summit. A high angle descent by rope from the summit revealed the dog was located about 1000 feet down the rock face. Upon arrival at the dog's location, team member Chris Blees determined the dog was not seriously injured, the only apparent injury was to a toe. The short hair dog had survived an evening of temperatures around 20 deg farenheit and consierable wind. Blees constructed a web harness for the dog and they returned to the summit to a crowd of TV cameras and a greatful owner. EPCSAR does not normally respond to rescue animals except in situations where technical skills are required and there is potential that an inexperienced person might endanger their life to reach the animal. Such was the case with the owner being able to hear the dogs bark, and not able to see. The Bottomless Pit is aptly named and the danger being that any falling object or person would fall a minimum of 2000 vertical feet before being stopped. submitted by: Ron Lee (ron.lee@symbios.com) --------------------------
