*** Succesful Rescue from Crashed Cessna *** Date: Sun, 28 Jul 1996 12:07:02 -0400 From: Stoweagle@aol.com To: sarinfo@mindlink.bc.ca Subject: Mission Report July 19, 1996: A Cessna 172 with the pilot and one passenger on board crashed during a foggy approach to the Stowe/Morrisville airport in northern Vermont. Shortly after the crash a US Air flight to Burlington reported seeing the crash and radioed its approximate location to the FAA, who notified the Lamoille County Sheriff's Department at 19:07. Local fire departments and law enforcement were dispatched but were unable to immediately locate the plane. A command post was established at the Morrisville Fire Station, with Neil Van Dyke, chief of the Stowe Mountain Rescue Team as incident commander. Shortly thereafter the pilot of the plane, Brad Brenner of Cranford, NJ was able to make radio contact with air traffic controllers on a hand held radio and advise them that both he and his passenger, Lenny Holler, were uninjured. There were unable, however, to shed any light on their location other than that their altimeter was showing 2100 feet. At approximately 22:30 CAP ground units were able to get a fix on the location of the ELT at the same time as lookouts posted in the fire tower at the summit of Elmore Mtn. were able to make verbal contact with the subjects. The plane was located shortly thereafter in a steep heavily wooded near the summit ridge of Elmore Mountain. The miraculously uninjured subjects were able to walk out to the road. The cause of the crash is under investigation. Submitted by Neil Van Dyke -----------------------
