*** Search Manager Assists Long-Distance Rescue *** From: Mike Hannah mike_hannah@sunshine.net To: sarinfo@istar.ca Date: 29th July 1997 On the evening of July 23 1997, the Sunshine Coast Search and Rescue Search Manager was listening in on his Ham Radio When over the waves came a distress call :May Day, May Day". The call came from hundreds of miles to the north from a remote cabin in the northern BC wilderness. A women, a 20 year old tourist, was badly injured when she fell from the roof of the cabin. Her friend, a ham operator, had tried to send his emergency message out on several frequencies nearer to their location but had not received any response. One of the calls was picked up by a Sunshine Coast SAR Search Manager and some fellow Ham operators. Quick to respond they acknowledge the distress call and followed with a second call to the Emergency Command Center in Victoria, B.C.. Soon a helicopter was airborne to the cabin, dispatched form Terrace BC. Our Search Manager and his Ham radio friends maintained contact with the couple in distress until the helicopter arrived at their cabin. As of late last week the woman was reported to be in good condition in the Terrace Hospital. Submitted by Mike Hannah, Sunshine Coast SAR Team -----------------------
