*** Hiker Rescued from Waldo Canyon, CO *** Mon Apr 29 08:30:21 1996 Letter : 11719957 From: Ron Lee Address : ronlee@frii.com Subject : EPCSAR Mission 4/27/96 Waldo Canyon To: sarinfo@mindlink.bc.ca 27 April 1996: Ute Pass, Colorado - El Paso County Search and Rescue was paged out at 18:49 hours to respond to the Waldo Canyon trailhead along US-24 in Ute Pass west of Manitou Springs. A 50 year old female was reported down with ankle injury. 'Command' and a staging area was established in the parking lot at the trailhead. 18 team members responded. A quick response medical team of two (including an EMT certified team member) were initially sent up the trail to be followed shortly by a full hasty team. The victim was located being attended by two nurses and another EMT who happened to be on the trail. After patient assessment was complete, she was placed in a wire litter with wheel attached and evacuated from the scene. Due to past experience with terrain obstacles direct radio communications were expected to be unreliable between the 'Command' area and most of the trail. A radio relay was established immediately from a point within range of both 'Command' and the scene of the event. Although direct radio contact ocurred most of the time, the relay was needed in several instances to fill holes in the communications. The patient was brought off the trail approximately 20:45 hours to a waiting ambulance for transport to a Colorado Springs hospital. The mission was terminated at 21:02 hours 27 April 1996 {filed by ronlee@frii.com} ---------------------------
