*** 'Survivalist' Search, Wrangel, AK *** To: Search & Rescue Info Date sent: Tue, 26 Mar 96 10:13:11 -0800 From: Bruce_Bowler@dot.state.ak.us Subject: Michael Stout Search To: PCLAMICA%PSafety.Alaska@state.ak.us, kiny@ptialaska.net, Juneau, Alaska: "SEADOGS" search and rescue dog "Minnie" and handler Kirk Radach found the body of 27 year old survivalist Michael Stout Monday, 1 mile from a friend's makeshift cabin on Back Channel near Wrangell. Michael had been living there for almost a year. He died of "an apparently self-inflicted shotgun wound". Wrangell Police and the Alaska State Troopers asked "SEADOGS" for help this weekend after repeated attempts to locate him had failed. Kirk and "Minnie" and one other handler flew to Wrangell Late Sunday, and began searching the area, finding Michael's body Monday afternoon. Michael was sensitive and wanted to live in the wilderness, according to an interview with his father by Wrangell PD. He said that his son was "chemically sensitive" to enzymes and other chemicals within his system, and that was one reason why he came to the small community of Wrangell. Michael came to town once a month to pick up food stamps, an SSI check, and to collect supplies for the next month. Bruce Bowler, SEADOGS, Juneau, Alaska ------------------------------------------
