*** Out of Bounds Snowboarder Found By Rescue Team *** Date: March 28, 1997: From: Greg Miller email: MillerGR@EM.AGR.CA North Shore Rescue, B.C. Cypress Bowl, BC. North Shore Rescue was contacted by West Vancouver Police at 2030 hrs requesting assistance in locating a 32 year old male out of bounds snow boarder who had been reported overdue by friends. The subject, Richard Willoughby, a Vancouver resident, had been boarding with friends outside the Cypress Ski area boundary in an area known as the Glades. They had agreed to rendezvous at the bottom of the Sunrise Chair if they were separated. After waiting 40 minutes for Richard to join them, the friends notified the Cypress Ski Patrol that he was missing. He had last been seen by them at about 1700 hrs. The Ski Patrol did a perimeter check and followed tracks leading into the Montezambert Creek basin. This area has been the focus of several searches this year and is in steep and rugged terrain. March 29: The subject was located by Search Teams at 0213 hrs at the 650 m level in the north fork of Montezambert Creek. Teams had been deployed down from the top and up the Creek from Highway 99. The subject was slightly hypothermic, wet and tired. The Search Team gave some initial treatment and guided the subject back up the mountain to the Cypress Ski area. The evacuation involved a 270 m climb in heavy wet snow conditions. The recovery was completed by approximately 0600 hrs. The task involved 20 members of North Shore Rescue and a number of Cypress Bowl staff. Submitted by: Greg Miller North Shore Search & Rescue ----------------------------
