BACKGROUND: This material is compiled by amateur radio volunteers at the Provincial Emergency Program (PEP) head office in Victoria, BC. It is sent throughout British Columbia on the amateur radio packet data network. It has been retrieved from an amateur radio packet BBS and adapted for the Mindlink BBS. When a community volunteer SAR group responds to a call for assistance, a task number is issued by PEP headquarters to cover basic expenses. The information about the operation is provided by the SAR group and makes up the summary of the operational tasks you see below. FVA Region - 23 Oct - UPDATE 4 PEP were assisting on the second day of the search for 3 males in a 4x4 overdue in the Sumas Mt. area near Chilliwack. They drove out of the area. Their vehicle had been stuck and they spent the night digging it out. 2. NWE Region - 05 Oct - UPDATE Teenage female is still missing from area of Smithers. 30 more PEP assisted RCMP in and around the outskirts of Smithers. It was decided to end search. Female has been missing since June, 1994. 3. VIS Region - 24 Oct - 12 PEP from Lake Cowichan and Port Alberni assisted in search for overdue hunter in the Flora Lake area, west of Lake Cowichan. Hunter was located in good shape. 4. VIS Region - 25 Oct - 44 PEP members from Campbell River and Courtenay SAR teams assisted RCMP in search for missing mushroom picker in the Browns Bay area. Was located and picked up by RCMP helicopter and then taken to hospital for check up. 5. SCO Region - 26 Oct - 8 PEP members from North Shore Rescue assisted in locating a stranded hiker on Grouse Mt. Hiker had been overtaken by darkness. He used his cellular phone to call for help and to keep in contact with PEP members until they could locate him and escort him out. 6. FVA Region - 29 Oct - 30 PEP responded to rescue a male who had fallen 30 feet down a cliff on Morris Valley Road by the Chehalis River. Male transported to hospital with minor injuries. 7. SCO Region - 30 Oct - 29 PEP from Lions Bay and North Shore Rescue are involved in search for 7 males stranded in whiteout conditions in the Lions area. Group consists of 1 male and 6 boys ages 14 - 17 from the Porteau Boys Camp. All located OK. CTL Region - 30 Oct - UPDATE - Overdue hiker was located in Blackwater area of Anahim Lake by Williams Lake SAR team. A total of 6 PEP members were involved. The hiker was delayed by snow and poor trail conditions. 2. SCO Region - 30 Oct - UPDATE - 49 total PEP members from Squamish assisted in locating 79 year old female mushroom picker in the Daisy Lake area of Squamish. Medi-vac to hospital with mild hypothermia. 3. CTL Region - 03 Nov - 5 members from the Clearwater search team assisted RCMP in the search for two overdue hunters from an area between 100 Mile House and Clearwater. They were located safely in the Slocan Forest District. 4. SCO Region - 04 Nov - 11 Lions Bay SAR members assisted in search for three 8 year old youths who became overdue from hiking on a logging road in the Lions Bay area. All three were located and returned to their parents. All were OK. 5. KTN Region - 06 Nov - 7 Fernie SAR members responded to search for overdue snowmobilers in the Coal Creek area near Fernie. Snowmobilers returned on their own without incident. KTN Region - 07Nov - Nelson SAR team assisted EHS in bringing an injured male out from a bush area near Nelson. Male had fallen and broken his leg. It took 6 SAR members 6 hours to bring victim out. 2. NEA Region - 08 Nov - One SAR member in McBride assisted RCMP in organizing a search team for first light to locate two overdue snowmobilers on Belle Mt. near McBride. Before light one of the snowmobilers came out of the area and reported that his partner had fallen down a cliff with his snowmobile and was badly injured. SAR members and paramedics responded with an evacuation sled to the scene and brought the victim out. He had suffered two broken arms and was transported to hospital. 3. FVA Region - 09 Nov - Island County Sheriff's Department of Washington State requested two members from the Maple Ridge SAR group, with a search dog, to assist them in locating an elderly male with Alzheimer's Disease. He was missing on Orcas Island. Tracks were located and there was no longer and requirement for dog assistance as trackers were available on the island. Male was located and found to be OK. 4. FVA Region - 12 Nov - 17 Kent/Harrison SAR members assisted by 10 members from Chilliwack SAR responded in the rescue of a hiker who had fallen down a cliff in the Chehalis River Valley, 30 kms northwest of Agassiz. Hiker was located, rope lifted to ambulance and taken to Chilliwack hospital. He was alive but had suffered severe injuries in the fall. 5. VIS Region - 13 Nov - 11 members of Port Alberni SAR responded to search for 3 lost hunters on Beaufort Range. The hunters, a father and 2 his sons were located OK. Their vehicle had become stuck in the snow. SCO Region - 21 Nov - 3 members of North Shore rescue team responded to request for assistance, report of person in water in Lynn Canyon, North Vancouver. On arrival determined no one in distress. River course being conducted and no one advised. 2. KTN Region - 22 Nov - Grand Forks Search and Rescue team responded to search for overdue snowmobiler 40 km northeast of Grand Forks. Missing male was located safe. He ran out of gas. 3. VIS Region - 23 Nov - 10 members of Port Alberni Search and Rescue were involved in the search for two overdue cross country skiers in the Mount Arrowsmith area. They were located alive and well. They had become snowbound when their vehicle got stuck in over 4 feet of snow. Search team had to use bulldozer from ski lodge to dig out vehicle. 4. OKN Region - 26 Nov - 5 members of the Princeton Rescue team were called to assist in bringing up a male who had gone over a bank with his horse. He was brought up and taken to hospital with a possible broken pelvis. 5. KTN Region - 26 Nov - Rossland Search and Rescue was involved in rescuing a skier who had shattered his knee while skiing in an "out of bounds" area on Red Mountain Ski Resort. A helicopter was utilized as there was only 1 hour of daylight left for the 6 team members to walk in. He was successfully brought out by helicopter and transported to hospital. 6. SCO Region - 27 Nov - Pemberton search team responded to search and rescue for an overdue female cross country skier west of Duffy Lake. She was located and removed to Pemberton Clinic. She had suffered an ankle injury. Other Incidents: 22 Nov - Kelowna - approximately 200 persons evacuated from their homes for a number of hours due to a fire involving chemicals in a photocopy warehouse. 26 Nov - Squamish - 3 members of Squamish SAR team rescued a dog stranded on a cliff ledge for three days. The dog, apparently OK, was re-united with his owners.
