*** Cellphone Call from Crashed Cessna 185 *** Subject: Cell Phones and Airplanes Date: Tue, 18 Feb 1997 00:42:23 -0800 From: RICHARD DUCLOS To: "sar-l-d@islandnet.com" Cell phones are great to add to a survival kit. A search was called monday for the survivors of an airplane crash north of Sept-Iles, Quebec, Canada after one of them called police for help on his cellular phone. Local police received the call for help and several rescue aircraft were dispatched. The ski-equipped Cessna 185 was on a flight from Sept-Iles to Wabush. I am member of Canadian Search And Rescue Association. In Montreal and many cases are resolved and prevented quickly with the use of cell phones. 5 years ago at night i was flying back from a meeting along with a friend who was in another aircraft and he had an engine failure. I was able to follow him and locate the crash and then had to relay communications via a high flyer, who relayed to F.S.S., who relayed to the local police - which was time consuming. Luckily my friend was only slightly injured. I had no cell phone at that time but I wished I did. Richard Duclos Director SERABEC Montreal (CASARA) ------------------------------
