S&R BBS To: sarinfo@mindlink.bc.ca (Search and Rescue BBS) Dear Martin, Thank you for your speedy response to my enquiry. My name is Steve Cooke, and I am President of the KwaZulu-Natal Section of the Mountain Club of South Africa. We are an autonomous club affiliated to the National Mountain Club of South Africa, which has 13 sections through out Southern Africa. We are primarily a mountaineering club but at present I think six of these sections operate mountain search and rescue teams as well as our normal club activities. Our team is based in KwaZulu-Natal and we operate through out the province on a voluntary basis, offering steep slope and mountain search and rescue services to the government operated Ambulance and Emergency Medical Services (AEMS). We work in close cooperation with the South African Air Force (SAAF) for helicopter support, particularly for operations in the Drakenberg Mountains. Our club was formed in 1919 and has provided mountain SAR to the province since its founding. I personally have been a member of the club since 1977, and of the rescue team since 1990. We are always tasked through AEMS who can be contacted on +27 (0)31 3077744 or the local emergency number 10177. My personal contact details are: Home physical and postal address 46 Balmoral Drive Cowies Hill Pinetown 3610 South Africa Phone home +27 (0)31 727 844 Phone work +27 (0)31 701 0155 Fax +27 (0)31 701 5197 Our club address is P.O.Box 4535 Durban 4000 South Africa The club does not operate a phone. I hope this is of assistance, and I look forward to being kept up to date from your BBS. Kind regards Steve Cooke --------------------------------------
