Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) ------------------------------- Since 1991 work has been undertaken to develop a Personal Locator Beacon designed specifically for use by persons working on the ground in remote areas. This would include hikers, hunters, geologists, surveyors - anyone operating on the ground in a remote area. The PLB system now in place uses the joint USA-Canada-France-Russia COSPAS-SARSAT sattelite system. In 1992 and 1993 the Personal Locator Beacon was evaluated and approved for use in Canada, Great Britain and (under interim approval) in Alaska. The PLB's operate at 406 MHz, and are small, rugged, and lightweight, with a new design has drastically reduced the number of false alarms that plague the ELT/EPIRB's. The PLB's are much more accurate than 121.5 MHz ELT's and EPIRB's (Emergency Locator Transmitters for aircraft and Emergency Position Indicating Rescue Beacons for ships). The accuracy of a 406 MHz PLB is approximately 3km radius, compared to a 20 km radius for an ELT/EPIRB. This is very significant improvement in accuracy which reduces the search area from approximately 1260 square Kilometers to 28 square kilometers - a much more manageable undertaking for search teams. These Personal Locator Beacons are now available commercially as the 'SAT-FIND 406 Pocket PLB' and are registered on purchase with beacon signal information that can be traced to the user.
